Taffies and Sourdough: Escape to San Francisco

goldenSF.jpg
I escaped to San Francisco for two days, to enjoy the nightlife there, eat sourdough buns, try salt-water taffies and find a good coffee shop to hack some code.

Tom, Ezra, Scott, Rachel and I at the classy Martix Fillmore, down the Lombard end. This small place has warm feel (thanks to the magical fireplace that just emanates from a slab of marble), and modern atmosphere, with a really cool video screen arrangement captured below. On the left a Celtic street musician at Ghiradelli Square.

I only wish I had brought my bike! Below, Scott Ezra and I at Tosca's on Columbus.

Sausalito has a number of fancy shops downtown, some with some weird wares. On the right is part of the downtown fountain, looking out to the main street.

I have alumni!

Ryan, on exchange from George Washington University was in my Advanced Computer Science I class that I taught last year. Today Ryan and his girlfriend, Julia came down from her home in Nor*Cal, to pay me a visit in Santa Cruz. The weather wasn't particularly kind, but we did head to the Natural Bridges State park and saw the Monarch Butterflies sanctuary.

The Idan Raichel Project

idan1.jpg
Last night, The Idan Raichel Project an Ethiopian/Israeli group came to UCSC. It was a great experience, great music, and great company. Maybe it's just that ol' Santa Cruz feelin'...
Myself and the rest of the audience really enjoyed the concert, people danced in their seats, hoped around or moshed in the little space down at the stage. Music is a big part of life in the states, California doubly so. I've noticed the radio always has something good on, I think I find my tastes in popular music more akin to what they play here, over what I would hear in Aus.
The pictures here have all the usual guys, so I'm not gonna annotate.
