Bringing California home

Okay while I'm not in California anymore, its most charismatic company will sponsor my thesis work. This short article will appear in the next computer science newsletter at USyd...

The Apple University Consortium awarded a ten thousand dollar development grant to Simon Goldrei and the Smart Internet Technology Research Group for the ongoing development of Seminar. The Seminar project seeks to provide a simple, uniform method to capture computer-based presentations regardless of the software application used in the presentation. Seminar captures the video and audio of the presenter as well as a motion capture of the computer’s main display.

Future development of Seminar will provide the ability to create Learning Objects, which are re-usable segments of a presentation. By automatically capturing the meta-data pertaining to each Learning Object the system can provide searching of the Learning Objects stored in an archive. Users are then able to explore their own, following personalised learning tracks. Also envisaged in Seminar is to provide a syndication style Pod-Casting feature. This enables users to selectively aggregate seminars onto a portable media device, such as the Apple iPod.

The Apple University Consortium (Australia) has 31 member Universities. In conjunction with Apple, it aims to further develop Apple products and share experiences amongst these institutions. The Smart Internet Technology Research Group encompasses a range of areas relevant to the realisation of a smart Internet.

So Long and thanks for all the fish.

Last night I drove with Bronwyn to meet Kate in Berkeley for a last hoorrah. It was a very nice drive and we even ventured in the car up the hill behind the Berkeley campus up Panorama Way. Now I'm sitting at SFO, with my PowerBook on the wireless network, I will board in minutes. In front of me my plane all loaded up for the long flight to New Zealand. Just spending the remaining time on the phone with some of the many friends I have been fortune to have made here. I will when I return, I'll post the pictures I took over the last weeks.

This is my last post to SantaCruzin.org from within the United States. I have had a truly remarkable experience here, made so many good friends, learnt lots and had a heap of fun. This has been the most exciting adventure of my life. I will remember everyone and will surely keep in touch. I have seen that this world, although physically vast, can be bridged easily in this age. I promise to keep in touch and to visit as soon as I can. Thanks for the great times, the friendship and the love.

Spring Sunset in Santa Cruz

How can I help but miss this? Santa Cruz is a weird and wonderful place. I think it was just luck that I found it, and then came to live and study in this corner of paradise...

Samba, Hippies and Tree Huggers.

sambada5.jpg
I just finished the final draft of my Computer Security term project on Digital Rights Management. I also received my much anticipated grades from Fall quarter and was excited at the result... What better way to finish off the day, then to head to the wharf for the 13th Jazz on the Wharf festival!

Afterwards Kate made dinner for the Kresege/English clan, the theme was Hippies and Tree huggers. Dianna and Yael fitted me out in their finest garb...

Santa Cruz has finally rubbed off on me. Soon it will be time to head home.
